WORKSHOP & CONFERENCE IN DRAMATHERAPY: Healing the Wounds of History by Ali Kirstein, MA, MFT, CCCHealing the Wounds of History is a dramatherapeutic model in which experiential techniques are used to work with a group of participants who share a common legacy of historical trauma, helping participants work through the burden of such legacies by transforming their pain into understanding and constructive action. DISCUSSION WITH PHIL JONESImagining difference: How to research the arts therapies?
Phil Jones will discuss the nature and role of research in the arts therapies, this will include material from the forthcoming book he edited:
Drama As Therapy 2: Clinical Work and Research into Practice (Routledge 2010). Afterwards he will lead an inter-disciplinary panel exploring how the arts therapies are creating dialogues with different disciplines and developing new ideas and routes to looking at areas such as efficacy and the impact of therapy. This seminar will include Yehudit Silverman, winner of the NADT 2009 research award, Sandi Curtis, Director of the new Music Therapy program, Stephen Snow Chair of the Creative Arts Therapies Department (currently on Sabbatical), as well as Athena Madan and Lindsay Chipman contributors to Drama Therapy 2.
Book Launch to follow panel. Dr Phil Jones, Leeds University, England, visiting professor Concordia University, has lectured and published widely on a variety of subjects. Publications include 'The Arts Therapies' (Routledge 2005), Drama As Therapy Volume 1' (Routledge 2007 second edition), 'Supervision of Dramatherapy' (with Dokter Routledge 2009), 'Rethinking Childhood' (Continuum 2009) 'Drama As Therapy Volume 2' (Routledge 2010) and 'Rethinking Children's Rights' (with Welch Continuum 2010). He is series editor for Continuum's 'New Childhoods' research driven books. His publications have been translated and published in Chinese, Greek and Korean. Phil has given key note speeches at conferences in a number of countries - from New York, USA to Athens, Greece, Lisbon, Portugal to Johannesburg, South Africa. Phil has held the posts of Reader in Childhood at Leeds Metropolitan University and Course Leader in the arts therapies at the University of Hertfordshire.

WORKSHOP & DISCUSSION: Metaphors of Home in Drama Therapy with Children and Adolescents by Susan Ward, MA, RDT, Leigh Bulmer, MA, CCC and Zeeva Weisz, MAThis experiential workshop and discussion will explore metaphors of home using drama therapy. In our work with children, the metaphor of the home has emerged as an important theme, and has enabled us to explore, through story, embodiment, and role, the following concepts: home as a metaphor for one's sense of self; home as a secure base from which one can begin one's journey; home as a place to establish and explore social relationships; the redefinition of home as one experiences life's changes. Participants will gain an understanding of different methods of exploring the meaning of home.

PRESENTATION: Using Drama Therapy in Family Therapy by Bonnie Harnden, MA, RDT, S. Syd. Apel, MEdThis presentation will focus on how current family therapy and drama therapy techniques can be used together to heal and stabilize families. The facilitators will present the value of teaching parents how to use play/drama therapy with their children to help them learn cognitive flexibility and to avoid explosions and flooding. This presentation will also discuss how difficult and potentially explosive moments between parents and children can become moments of joy and transformation. Clinical examples illustrating how to use Drama therapy in families with children with ADHD, OCD and PTSD will be presented.

WORKSHOP: Playing with Fire and Not Getting Burned: How Principles of Developmental Transformation Can Enhance Your Practice by Jason Butler, RDT/BCTIn this three-hour workshop we will explore the Developmental Transformations (DvT) approach to drama therapy. Through both experiential and didactic portions, participants will explore their own relationship to play as well as the application of DvT principles to psychotherapy. This workshop will not train you to be a DvT therapist, but it will explore new tools that you can use immediately in your own practice.
