DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC
FACULTY OF FINE ARTS, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY
Limited-Term Appointment Position in Music (contemporary classical)
Concordia University's Department of Music invites applications for one limited-term appointment position in the area of contemporary classical music at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor, effective August 15, 2010 to May 31, 2011.
Limited-term appointment positions are subject to budgetary approval and department or unit need. Individuals holding limited-term appointments may be reappointed, given continued funding and need, as well as satisfactory job performance. Together, initial appointments and subsequent reappointments may not exceed 36 months or a span of three consecutive years.
We offer undergraduate BFA Majors in Integrative Music Studies and Electroacoustic Studies, and BFA Specializations in Jazz Studies, Music Performance Studies and Music Composition as well as a graduate Diploma in Advanced Music Performance Studies.
Under the leadership of its new Chair, the Department of Music is developing new initiatives in contemporary classical music to complement its strengths in jazz and electroacoustics. We offer music performance (instrumental and vocal) and composition as areas of concentrated study, built around a core curriculum of general music instruction with room for electives in music and cognate areas of fine arts.
The Department participates actively in the Montreal music community and collaborates with other Concordia Fine Arts departments. An impending move into new facilities on our downtown campus adjacent to the Faculty's other performing arts departments will facilitate cross-disciplinary opportunities in the areas of contemporary dance, theatre, film, animation, installation art, and performance art.
During the initial appointment, the successful candidate will normally be expected to teach three undergraduate courses per semester (18 credits total), selected from courses in performance, composition, theory and aural skills. Responsibilities will also include active involvement in committees and administrative work.
Candidates should have appropriate terminal degree qualifications in contemporary classical music with at least three years of teaching experience within an academic or conservatory environment. Knowledge and cross-disciplinary experience in other performance arts, and/or other music genres, would be an asset. We are seeking candidates who are excellent teachers with demonstrated ability to work well within a team. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in spoken and written French would be considered an asset.
Submissions
should consist of a letter of application; an up-to-date curriculum
vitae; a statement of teaching philosophy and interests; evidence of
teaching effectiveness (including course syllabi and evaluations); samples of musical work (in score form, CD, DVD, as
appropriate) and the names and contact information of three referees.
Applications should be submitted by
