MEL HOPPENHEIM SCHOOL OF CINEMA
FACULTY OF FINE ARTS, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY

Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Film Animation

Concordia University's Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema invites applications for one tenure-track position in Film Animation for July 1, 2012.

The Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema - Canada's largest university-based centre for the study of film animation, film production and film studies - is highly regarded around the world. The School has the distinct advantage of being situated in Concordia's vibrant Faculty of Fine Arts, where faculty and students enjoy numerous cross-disciplinary opportunities, state-of-the-art resources and facilities, and a rich artistic and cultural context for research and study.  Currently, our faculty complement includes 23 full-time professors and about 40 part-time instructors, teaching more than 500 students. Our faculty and alumni have strong ties with the Quebec and Canadian film communities, and have won numerous international film awards.

The Film Animation program is committed to the exploration of animated filmmaking as an art form and provides students with a rich foundation in creative work at the intersection of art and technology.  Diversity of method and technique in traditional as well as digital media is actively encouraged.  A graduate stream in animation is in development.  Faculty members are expected to participate in the design and development of undergraduate and graduate-level courses, and perform administrative duties for the Film Animation program, the School and the university.

The successful candidate will have a recognized, active animation filmmaking career and an innovative research / creation practice.  Candidates must hold a terminal degree in animation or a related field and be conversant with analogue and digital technologies.  They should possess a wide range of skills including 2D and 3D animation, object and direct animation, excellent drawing skills, knowledge of post-production methodologies, and sound design/music composition for the animated film.  Areas of research specialization may include classical animated filmmaking, experimental or documentary approaches to animation, and animated installation. University-level teaching experience in animation will be considered an advantage. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in spoken and written French will be regarded as an asset.

Submissions should consist of a letter of application; an up-to-date curriculum vitae; a statement of teaching interests; evidence of teaching effectiveness (including course syllabi and evaluations); an extensive portfolio of animated professional film creation reflecting the last five to eight years of active practice; and the names and contact information of three referees.

Applications should be submitted by November 15, 2011 directly to:
