Chair: Michael Montanaro

The Department of Contemporary Dance is one of the few dance departments in North America dedicated to the creative and choreographic processes. Based on a comprehensive approach to creation and performance, the Contemporary Dance program supports a curriculum that teaches technical skills, theory, creative thinking, self-direction and studio exploration.

The program is designed to develop individuality, with emphasis on the discovery and development of the creative capacity of each student. Formal study is enhanced through a series of workshops and lectures given by national and international artists. Full-time faculty have extensive professional experience directing their own companies and choreographing for major multidisciplinary productions. Talented professional artists from Montreal’s vibrant dance community participate in the department as part-time faculty and guest teachers, affording students the opportunity to experience a variety of movement aesthetics and artistic visions.

The Department’s success is a reflection of its high standards, enduring commitment to excellence and innovation, and continued dedication to the belief that the human imagination is the heart and soul of all great art.
