The programs offered by the Department of Creative Arts Therapies are designed to develop professional competence in the use of the arts for preventative, therapeutic and rehabilitative purposes. Core courses identify the nuances of the relationship between the therapist and clients, group dynamics, attachment orientations, and personal relationships, ethical dilemmas, psychodynamic approaches and creative arts therapy techniques. Students also acquire clinical skills in an innovative field and develop research projects related to their area of specialization. As Montreal provides many excellent opportunities for clinical training, students fulfill their internship requirements in hospitals, schools, and community settings.
The Department has also established The Centre for the Arts in Human Development at Concordia University, an educational, research and clinical centre, where each year several students complete their practicum. The Centre serves adults with various types of developmental disabilities, and has developed pilot programs for at-risk youth and individuals with psychiatric disabilities. The Centre’s Public Outreach Program presents art exhibitions and musical theatre performances.
